The Facts

• The report has found that while crime on the whole has declined over the past decade, crimes against business and retail such as shop theft are actually on the rise on both sides of the Tasman.
• While the number of residential burglaries in New South Wales, Australia, decreased by 2.8% since the last statistical year, the number of aggravated burglaries increased by 10.2% and the number of shop thefts increased by 22%. The story is similar – although less severe – in other Australian states.
• In tough times, commercial theft usually rises. Australia and New Zealand may have avoided the worst of the global recession, but there’s been no shortage of financial pressure on businesses and individuals over the past 18 months, and the statistics seem to reflect this.
  
• The existence of an alarm system in a home does deter would be intruders and improvements in the technology of personal crime prevention, including wireless remote alarms and video verification, and highly-rated monitored response services has contributed positively to the gradual decline in crimes against property and persons.
